Overview
DestiMED—a project focused on developing sustainable travel in the Mediterranean—needed a way to quickly and clearly explain the environmental impact of any given tourist package. We partnered with our longstanding client the Global Footprint Network (GFN) to create the Ecotourism Footprint Calculator, an online tool designed to help tour operators determine the impact of existing, proposed, or envisioned activities.
Building off of GFN’s initial fact-finding activities, we determined that DestiMED’s new calculator would need some initial branding and creative work, in addition to product development.
Working with key stakeholders at DestiMED, we developed a number of initial creative concepts before settling on a brand identity that expressed the project’s unique mission. Before jumping into development, we provided technical recommendations on the best ways to bring DestiMED’s idea to life.
With a strategy in place, we developed an information architecture that would best serve the needs of DestiMED’s site visitors. We designed and built the Calculator and the website itself to provide a simple, seamless experience for the tour operators who made up DestiMED’s target audience.
The Ecotourism Footprint Calculator and website are now available all around the Mediterranean, giving tour operators the ability to reduce impact on their local ecosystems while still providing powerful, transformative experiences for their clients. We continue to work with the Global Footprint Network on this and other calculators, including a tool designed to help higher education institutions determine their own ecological footprints.
